Essential Trip Information
Vietnamism has compiled this Essential Trip Information with care and in good faith for your travel package, trip, excursion or tour, helping you prepare for an unforgettable holiday experience in Vietnam.
The information provides an accurate illustration of the proposed arrangements for your holiday. Occasionally, our itineraries are updated throughout the year to incorporate improvements based on feedback from previous travelers, changes in local conditions and our own research.
The information provided in your digital itinerary may differ slightly by the time of your departure. It is very important that you review the final version of your Itinerary & Trip Notes a few days before traveling, in case there have been changes that affect your plans. Vietnamism will provide you with the latest updated itinerary before departure.
If you have any questions, please contact Vietnamism directly. We are here to help.
While Vietnamism operates a variety of trips, excursions and tours throughout Vietnam during the year, changes may occasionally occur in our itineraries. Circumstances beyond our control, such as local conditions, adverse weather, timetable changes, transportation changes or other unforeseen circumstances, may require us to modify an itinerary.
Any costs shown are subject to change, although they accurately reflect the expected costs at the time of writing. Changes can sometimes occur at short notice, so travelers should be prepared for modifications to the route, order or timing of activities.
Optional Activities
A selection of optional activities that have been popular with previous travelers may be listed in your day-to-day itinerary or Trip Notes. These lists are not exhaustive and should be used as a guide to what may be available.
Prices are approximate and may cover entrance fees only. Unless specifically stated, they may not include transportation, local guides or other associated costs.
All activities are subject to availability and may operate on a join-in basis. It may not be possible to participate in every activity listed within the time available at each destination, so we recommend planning in advance according to your interests.
Where advance booking is recommended, this will normally be noted in the Special Information section of your itinerary. Other activities may be arranged independently, through our local destination specialists or with assistance from your tour leader.
Where activities are considered medium or high risk, Vietnamism aims to work with operators whose safety standards and credentials have been reviewed.
Although you may find similar activities at lower prices from other operators, Vietnamism cannot guarantee the safety, quality or operating standards of activities booked independently.
Participation in activities not arranged or recommended by Vietnamism is at the traveler’s own discretion and risk.
Please also note that visa requirements are subject to change and remain the responsibility of the traveler.
Important Notes

Minimum age requirements may vary according to the itinerary and activities. Please check your individual trip information before booking.
Child Discounts
Child discounts may apply to selected tours. Please check the specific conditions and prices applicable to your chosen itinerary.

A single supplement may be available for selected cruises, train journeys, hotels, homestays and private tours.

Arrival Transfer
Where an airport arrival transfer is included in your itinerary, please provide your correct flight information to Vietnamism within the timeframe stated in your booking confirmation.
Transfer inclusions and conditions depend on your specific tour package.
Passport and Visas
Passport
You will need a valid passport to travel internationally.
Many destinations require passports to have a minimum period of validity remaining beyond the intended travel dates. Requirements vary according to nationality and destination.
Please ensure that the name on your passport exactly matches the name used for your booking and airline tickets.
Contact Vietnamism immediately if you notice any errors.
We also recommend keeping secure copies of your passport and other important travel documents separately from the originals.
Visas
Visa requirements are the responsibility of the individual traveler.
Entry requirements can change at any time. It is important to check official government travel advisories and the relevant embassy, consulate or immigration authority for the most up-to-date requirements applicable to your nationality and circumstances.
Visa processing may take time, so we recommend researching your requirements as soon as you book your trip.
Where available, Vietnamism can provide general travel information and assistance regarding Vietnam’s tourist visa procedures. Travelers remain responsible for ensuring that they hold the correct documentation required for entry.
General Health
All travelers should be in suitable physical health to participate safely and comfortably in their selected trip, excursion or tour.
When selecting your trip, please read the itinerary carefully and consider your ability to participate in the activities involved.
You should consult an appropriate healthcare professional for current medical travel advice and information regarding vaccinations or other health precautions before departure.
We recommend carrying a basic first-aid kit and an adequate supply of any personal medication you require.
Mosquito-Borne Illnesses
Mosquito-borne illnesses can occur in parts of Southeast Asia.
Travelers should take appropriate preventive measures, including using insect repellent, wearing suitable clothing and seeking professional medical advice regarding recommended vaccinations or preventative medication for their itinerary.
Zika Virus
Travelers should protect themselves against mosquito bites.
Pregnant travelers or those planning pregnancy should consult an appropriate healthcare professional for current advice before traveling to destinations where mosquito-borne illnesses may present a risk.
Food and Dietary Requirements
Traveling with Vietnamism gives you the opportunity to experience Vietnam’s diverse cuisine.
Depending on your itinerary, some meals may be included while others are left open so you can choose where, what and with whom you would like to eat.
Your tour leader or local destination specialist can recommend restaurants and local dishes.
Breakfasts
Hotels often provide buffet or set breakfasts featuring Vietnamese and Western options.
Breakfasts at homestays and smaller properties may be simpler and typically include local dishes, eggs, bread, fruit, tea or coffee.
Takeaway breakfasts for early departures may be more basic.
Dietary Requirements & Food Allergies
Please inform Vietnamism of any dietary requirements or food allergies when making your booking.
We will make reasonable efforts to accommodate vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and other dietary requirements, but availability varies by destination and supplier.
Travelers with serious food allergies should provide detailed information before departure.
Family Accommodation
Family of Two
Room arrangements depend on the travelers and accommodation selected. A twin or double room will normally be arranged according to availability and booking requirements.
Family of Three
Where possible, a triple room may be arranged.
In some destinations, triple rooms may consist of a twin or double room with an additional bed.
Where a suitable triple room is unavailable, alternative room arrangements may be necessary.
Family of Four or More
Families of four or more may be accommodated in two rooms or, where available, larger family accommodation.
Vietnamism will make reasonable efforts to arrange rooms close together or adjoining rooms where possible, but this cannot always be guaranteed, particularly during peak travel periods.
Accommodation standards vary according to the itinerary. Your trip may include locally operated hotels, guesthouses, homestays or other accommodation selected for location, experience, atmosphere and value.
Transport
Transportation used during a Vietnamism itinerary may include:
- Boats
- Minibuses
- Overnight sleeper trains
- Private vehicles
- Domestic flights
- Public transportation
Please provide your full name exactly as shown on your passport whenever required for transportation bookings.
Domestic airlines and schedules are subject to availability and operational changes.
Money Matters
Spending Money
Every traveler has different spending habits.
Please budget an appropriate amount for optional meals, drinks, shopping, laundry, optional activities, tips and other personal expenses.
Read your itinerary and inclusions carefully so that you understand what is included in your trip price and what you may need to pay for separately.
Contingency Funds
Travel can occasionally be affected by circumstances beyond our control, including severe weather, natural disasters, transportation disruptions or other force majeure events.
We recommend maintaining access to emergency funds to cover unexpected expenses or itinerary changes.
The amount required will depend on your travel style, destination and personal circumstances.
Vietnam
ATMs are widely available in cities and major tourist destinations in Vietnam and generally dispense Vietnamese dong (VND).
Credit and debit cards are accepted by many hotels, restaurants and businesses, but cash remains useful for smaller purchases, local markets and rural areas.
We recommend carrying a reasonable amount of Vietnamese dong in smaller denominations for everyday expenses.
Tipping
Tipping is generally discretionary in Vietnam but is appreciated for excellent service within the tourism and hospitality industries.
The amount is entirely your choice and should reflect your satisfaction with the service provided.
Optional Tipping Kitty
On some group trips, your tour leader may discuss the option of creating a group tipping kitty.
Participation is voluntary.
If used, the kitty may be distributed among drivers, local guides, hotel staff or other service providers. Your tour leader should explain how the funds are managed.
Your Tour Leader
You may choose to tip your tour leader if you feel they have provided outstanding service.
Any tip is entirely discretionary.
Packing
What you need to bring depends on your travel style, destination and season.
As a general rule, we recommend packing as lightly as practical and ensuring that you can comfortably carry and lift your own luggage for short distances and on stairs where necessary.
Smaller luggage is particularly convenient when traveling by train, public transportation or staying in locally operated accommodation.
A small day bag is useful for carrying water, your camera, sunscreen, personal items and a light jacket while sightseeing.
Water Bottle
Consider bringing a reusable water bottle that you can refill where safe drinking water is available.
Reducing the use of single-use plastic bottles helps minimize waste and supports more responsible travel.
Climate and Seasonal Information
Wet Season
During periods of heavy rainfall, particularly during the wet season, transportation arrangements or itineraries may need to change at short notice because of local weather conditions.
Tet Holiday
Tet is Vietnam’s Lunar New Year and the country’s most important traditional holiday.
Traveling during Tet can be a fascinating cultural experience, but travelers should be prepared for:
- High demand for transportation
- Busy tourist attractions
- Some businesses being closed
- Higher demand for accommodation
- Possible itinerary or transportation changes
Vietnamism will make reasonable efforts to operate trips according to the planned itinerary and communicate known changes before departure.
Vietnamism Tour Leaders
Selected Vietnamism group trips may be accompanied by a tour leader, guide or local destination specialist.
Their role is to help make your journey easier and more enjoyable, provide practical information, assist with logistics and introduce you to Vietnam’s culture, cuisine and destinations.
Tour leaders are not babysitters. Parents and guardians remain responsible for supervising their children at all times.
Safety
We recommend checking your government’s current travel advice for Vietnam before departure and ensuring that your travel insurance covers all destinations and activities included in your trip.
Take sensible precautions with passports, cash, cards, electronic devices and other valuables.
Your guide or tour leader will accompany you during scheduled activities where applicable. During free time, optional activities undertaken independently are not operated by Vietnamism, and travelers should exercise appropriate judgment when selecting providers and activities.
Your tour leader may amend or cancel an activity or part of an itinerary where reasonably necessary because of safety concerns.
Vietnamism is committed to taking reasonable precautions to provide safe travel experiences for our travelers, guides, tour leaders and partners.
No set of guidelines can anticipate every situation. Travelers, staff and local partners should always prioritize sound judgment and safety.
1. Transport
Vietnamism expects travelers to follow applicable safety requirements while using transportation.
Seat belts should be worn whenever they are available.
Travelers considering motorbike taxis or other optional transportation should assess the risks and check whether their travel insurance provides appropriate coverage.
1.1 Buses
Public and private buses may be used on selected itineraries.
Local transportation conditions can differ from those travelers experience in their home countries.
Where Vietnamism arranges private transportation, we aim to work with appropriately licensed operators that comply with applicable local requirements.
1.2 Boats and Ferries
For boat and ferry journeys included in our itineraries, Vietnamism works with local operators and expects appropriate safety equipment to be available according to the type of vessel and applicable regulations.
Travelers should always follow crew instructions regarding lifejackets and other safety measures.
1.3 Bicycles
Where cycling is included in an organized Vietnamism activity, appropriate safety instructions will be provided.
We strongly recommend wearing a suitable helmet whenever cycling, regardless of whether local regulations require one.
2. Accommodation
Accommodation safety standards vary throughout Vietnam.
Vietnamism aims to select appropriate accommodation through our local suppliers and partners, considering local standards and the nature of each itinerary.
Some itineraries may include homestays or other simple local accommodation where facilities and safety features differ from conventional hotels.
These experiences can be an important part of discovering Vietnam, and relevant information will be provided where appropriate.
3. Activities
Please inform Vietnamism before traveling about any circumstances that may materially affect your ability to participate safely in activities.
Before organized activities, guides or activity operators may provide a safety briefing.
Travelers should follow all safety instructions.
3.1 Trekking
Some itineraries may include trekking in rural, mountainous or remote areas.
Travelers should consider their physical capabilities before booking and bring appropriate footwear, clothing and equipment.
Always follow your guide’s instructions.
Weather, landslides, trail conditions or other circumstances may require an itinerary to be modified or an activity to be cancelled.
3.2 Flat-Water Canoeing & Kayaking
Where canoeing or kayaking is included, travelers should follow the instructions provided by the local guide or operator.
Lifejackets or other appropriate safety equipment should be worn as instructed.
Travelers should consider their swimming ability and comfort in open water before participating.
3.3 Animals
Vietnamism does not include animal-riding activities in our itineraries, as this is inconsistent with our approach to responsible tourism and animal welfare.
3.4 Snorkelling
For organized snorkelling activities, travelers should attend the safety briefing and carefully consider their swimming ability and previous experience.
Always follow the instructions of your guide or activity operator.
4. First Aid
Guides and activity providers may carry appropriate first-aid equipment according to the nature of the activity.
Travelers should always carry any essential personal medication and inform the appropriate tour staff of relevant information where necessary in an emergency.
Please contact Vietnamism if you have questions about safety or the physical requirements of a particular itinerary.
Water Safety
Take particular care when participating in activities in the sea, rivers or other open water.
Waves, currents, tides and weather conditions can change quickly.
Follow local advice and instructions from your guide or activity provider before entering the water.
Traffic and Road Safety
Traffic conditions in Vietnam may be different from those in your home country.
Vehicles in Vietnam drive on the right-hand side of the road.
Take extra care when crossing roads, look in both directions and move predictably.
Petty Theft and Personal Safety
As in many tourist destinations, pickpocketing and petty theft can occur.
Take sensible precautions, particularly in busy tourist areas and on public transportation.
Keep passports, money, phones and other valuables secure and avoid leaving bags unattended.
A Couple of Rules
Everyone has the right to feel safe while traveling.
Vietnamism does not tolerate violence, threatening behavior, sexual harassment or other conduct that compromises the safety and well-being of travelers, staff, partners or local communities.
The possession or use of illegal drugs is not tolerated on our trips.
Travelers choosing to consume alcohol are expected to drink responsibly and comply with Vietnamese law.
We oppose tourism activities that exploit vulnerable people, animals or local communities.
By traveling with Vietnamism, travelers agree to respect Vietnamese laws, local customs, communities and our Responsible Travel principles.
The decision of a tour leader or responsible local representative regarding immediate safety matters should be respected.
Traveling on a Group Trip
Group travel brings together people from different countries, cultures, backgrounds and age groups.
We ask all travelers to respect the needs of other group members, arrive at agreed meeting points on time and contribute positively to the group experience.
For privacy reasons, Vietnamism does not provide personal information or contact details of other travelers before departure without appropriate authorization.
Solo Travelers
Many travelers choose group tours because they are traveling solo and would like to share their experiences with other travelers.
Room-sharing arrangements vary according to the itinerary and accommodation.
Where a room-sharing arrangement applies, details will be provided before booking.
Single supplements may be available for travelers who prefer private accommodation.
Travel Insurance
Vietnamism strongly recommends comprehensive travel insurance for international travelers.
Your insurance should be appropriate for your itinerary and ideally include:
- Emergency medical expenses
- Emergency evacuation and repatriation
- Trip cancellation or interruption
- Personal liability
- Lost, stolen or damaged luggage
- Activities included in your itinerary
Travelers are responsible for checking that their insurance provides appropriate coverage for their personal circumstances and planned activities.
Responsible Travel
Vietnamism is committed to responsible tourism that respects the environment, supports local communities, protects vulnerable people and animals, and helps preserve Vietnam’s cultural and natural heritage.
Our guides, suppliers, partners and staff are encouraged to support these principles throughout our travel experiences.
When packing, remember that dress standards at religious sites and within local communities may be more conservative than in your home country.
We recommend modest, lightweight clothing that covers shoulders and knees when visiting temples, pagodas, religious sites and local homes.
Respecting local customs helps create more meaningful interactions between travelers and the communities they visit.
