- The season and weather conditions
Please also check the Essential Trip Information & Travel Notes provided for your selected Vietnamism itinerary. These will include any specific requirements for your trip, including luggage size or weight restrictions where applicable.

Luggage
For most Vietnamism trips, travelers should be able to manage their own luggage.
The most suitable luggage depends on your itinerary. A compact wheeled suitcase works well for many conventional trips, while a backpack or soft-sided travel bag may be more convenient for itineraries involving trains, boats, homestays or remote destinations.
Check your Essential Trip Information for any specific luggage requirements.
We generally recommend:
- Main suitcase, backpack or travel bag
- Small daypack
- Luggage locks
- Luggage identification tag
- Waterproof or protective luggage cover where useful
- Packing cubes or organizers
Try to pack light. Moving between hotels, trains, boats and vehicles is much easier with manageable luggage.
Clothing
Vietnam’s climate varies considerably between the north, central and southern regions, so clothing should be selected according to your itinerary and season.
Useful items include:
- Lightweight, breathable shirts
- T-shirts
- Long-sleeved shirts
- Lightweight trousers
- Shorts
- Skirts or dresses
- Socks
- Underwear
- Comfortable walking shoes
- Sandals or flip-flops
- Sleepwear
- Sun hat or cap
- Lightweight jacket
- Windproof jacket where appropriate
When visiting temples, pagodas, religious sites or local communities, we recommend respectful clothing that covers your shoulders and knees.
Quick-drying clothing is particularly useful for longer trips.
Cold Weather
Northern Vietnam and mountainous destinations such as Sapa, Ha Giang and Cao Bang can become surprisingly cool or cold, particularly during winter.
Depending on the season, consider packing:
- Thermal underwear or base layers
- Warm jacket
- Warm hat
- Gloves
- Warm socks
- Scarf
- Waterproof or weather-resistant shoes
- Lightweight fleece
Always check the weather forecast shortly before departure.
Swimming & Beach Holidays
For Ha Long Bay, Lan Ha Bay, Phu Quoc, Nha Trang, Da Nang, Hoi An and other coastal destinations, consider bringing:
- Swimwear
- Beach towel where necessary
- Sandals or water shoes
- Reef-safe sunscreen
- Sun hat
- Sunglasses
- Waterproof phone pouch
- Lightweight cover-up
Rainy Weather
Vietnam has different rainy seasons depending on the region.
Useful items include:
- Lightweight raincoat
- Waterproof jacket
- Compact umbrella
- Waterproof bags or dry bags
- Waterproof phone protection
- Quick-drying clothing
- Suitable footwear
A lightweight poncho can also be useful for sudden tropical rain.
Walking, Hiking & Trekking
If your Vietnamism itinerary includes trekking or extended walking, consider bringing:
- Comfortable walking or trekking shoes
- Appropriate socks
- Quick-drying clothing
- Small daypack
- Reusable water bottle
- Sun protection
- Insect repellent
- Lightweight rain jacket
- Trekking poles, if required
- Head torch for selected itineraries
For mountainous or remote trekking, check the specific equipment recommendations in your itinerary.
For Overnight Trains & Homestays
If your Vietnam itinerary includes overnight trains, homestays or more remote accommodation, these items may be useful:
- Small travel pillow
- Eye mask
- Earplugs
- Lightweight sleeping liner
- Personal toiletries
- Small towel
- Flip-flops
- Head torch
- Power bank
- Small padlock
- Easy-access overnight bag
Electronics
For most travelers, useful electronics include:

- Power bank

- Smartwatch charger, if required
Keep important electronics and batteries in your carry-on luggage where required by airline regulations.
What Not to Overpack
Vietnam has convenience stores, pharmacies, supermarkets, shopping centers and local markets in most major destinations.
You generally don’t need to bring large quantities of everyday items that can easily be purchased locally.
Focus instead on:
- Essential medication
- Important travel documents
- Comfortable clothing
- Good walking shoes
- Personal items that may be difficult to replace
- Equipment specifically required for your itinerary
Final Packing Tip
Pack light, pack smart and pack according to your itinerary.
